How does Chromium work?

Cells use chromium to make insulin work more effectively. First, When you ingest carbohydrates and they are broken down into glucose. Next, this glucose stimulates the release of insulin from the pancreas. Insulin allows glucose into cells to be used as energy. Lastly, chromium aids in this process by activating insulin receptors within the cells, bringing them to the surface allowing insulin to bind to the receptors.

The more insulin receptors you have on the cells, the less insulin you have to release to pull in carbohydrates. If your body has to release more insulin because cells have become resistant to its effects, it is known as insulin resistance. Therefore, supplementing with chromium reverses this effect.

If you are insulin resistant or consume too many carbohydrates, your body may not be able to bring the carbohydrates into cells. Although insulin brings carbohydrates into muscle, it can also bring them into fat. This means that if you release too much insulin, you could be storing carbohydrates in fat1.
